Mineral oils, more widely known as paraffins, are a byproduct of the distillation of crude oil. Therefore, they are commonly used in the cosmetics industry as a low-cost solvent. Paraffins are odorless, colorless and tasteless substances.

It turns out that even the best ingredients dissolved in paraffin do not have the ability to penetrate into the skin, but only remain on the surface of the skin, bringing the opposite effect to that expected. According to available expert opinions, mineral oils are the main reason for clogging pores, blocking the free breathing of the skin and the proper occurrence of metabolic processes. This is because the mineral oil layer is impermeable and, as a result, effectively blocks the penetration of needed nutrients into the hair or deeper layers of the skin.

Users of cosmetics with mineral oils often suffer from folliculitis and impaired healing of irritated skin. This is because paraffins create conditions for the growth of anaerobic bacteria that cause these ailments. Daily use of cosmetics with paraffin waxes can cause dry skin that does not produce lipids (the natural barrier that protects against moisture loss). Mineral oils can therefore slow down skin regeneration, accelerate the aging process, and definitely deteriorate hair structure.

Significantly, certification bodies under the auspices of the Council of Europe have banned the use of paraffins as ingredients in natural cosmetics.
